The short version: the Algarve does seafood plainly and brilliantly. Eat by the water, order the catch of the day, and don’t leave without trying cataplana, grilled sardines and — if you like them — a plate of local oysters.

Where to eat, by area

In the west, Lagos and Alvor are full of tiled seafood taverns; Vilamoura and the marinas do polished dining and oysters; in the east, Olhão has the coast’s best food market and no-frills fish grills. For the freshest catch, eat where the boats come in and order whatever is on the specials board.

Common questions

What food is the Algarve famous for?

Seafood above all — cataplana (a copper-pot seafood stew), charcoal-grilled sardines, arroz de marisco (seafood rice), fresh fish and oysters, plus piri-piri chicken and the local firewater, medronho.

Where is the best seafood in the Algarve?

Anywhere the boats come in — Olhão’s market grills in the east, the marinas of Vilamoura, and the taverns of Lagos and Alvor in the west. Ostra D'Ouro in Vilamoura is a standout for fish and oysters.

Do I need to book restaurants in the Algarve?

In July and August, yes — the best tables fill up, so book a day ahead, especially by the water and for dinner.
