When to visit the Algarve: a month-by-month guide
The Algarve is a year-round destination, but the experience changes completely by season. For most people the sweet spot is late May to June and September — here is why.
Short answer: aim for late May, June or September. You get warm, swimmable sea, 12+ hours of daylight and genuine heat, but without the peak-summer prices and packed car parks of July and August.
Season by season
Spring (March–May)
Green hills, wildflowers and mild days (18–24°C). The sea is still cool early on but warms through May. Ideal for walking the cliff trails, golf and towns without crowds. Easter is a busy exception.
Summer (June–August)
Hot, dry and buzzing. July and August are the peak — hottest weather, warmest sea, longest days, but also the highest prices and busiest beaches. June is the smart summer month: full heat, thinner crowds.
Autumn (September–October)
Many locals' favourite. The sea is at its warmest after a summer of sun, days are still long and the crowds thin out fast after the first week of September. October cools gently and stays pleasant.
Winter (November–February)
Mild, green and quiet, with plenty of bright days around 15–17°C — one of the warmest winters in mainland Europe. Too cool for most swimming, but excellent for golf, hiking, food and low prices.

The Algarve is Portugal's top region for hotel nights. In the most recent official figures (INE / Turismo do Algarve, September 2025), the region ran about 75.8% hotel occupancy across the third quarter, with an average stay of 3.98 nights and an average hotel rate of roughly €152 a night. Translation: book summer accommodation early, and expect the best value in spring, autumn and winter.
