Benagil Cave: how to actually visit (kayak, SUP or boat)

Benagil is the Algarve's most famous sight — a giant sea cave with a domed roof open to the sky. The one thing to know before you plan: you cannot walk in. You reach it from the water.

The cave sits just along the coast from Praia de Benagil, a small beach between Lagoa and Carvoeiro. Swimming to it is dangerous and now restricted; the sensible ways in are by kayak, stand-up paddleboard or boat.

Three ways to reach it

1. Kayak or SUP (most rewarding)

Rent a kayak or paddleboard on Praia de Benagil itself, or join a guided paddle. It is a short paddle to the cave and the only way you actually set foot on the sand inside the dome. Go with a guide if you are not a confident paddler — the swell can pick up.

2. Boat tour (easiest)

Coastal boat trips run from Portimão, Lagos, Albufeira, Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra. Larger boats pass the cave mouth; small RIBs and dinghies can nose inside when conditions allow. This is the low-effort option and often the best value if you also want to see the wider cliff coastline.

3. Tour from further afield

Most resorts sell combined trips that include Benagil plus other caves and grottoes along the Lagoa coast — a good half-day if you are based in the central Algarve.

Best time to go

  • Early morning — calmer sea, softer light and far fewer boats and paddlers inside the dome.
  • Late spring to early autumn — the most reliable conditions; winter swell often shuts access down.
  • Check the sea state — operators cancel when it is rough, so keep a flexible day in your plan.
Safety first Swimming into the cave is strongly discouraged and can be restricted — currents and boat traffic make it genuinely risky. Take a kayak, board or boat instead.

Benagil pairs well with the cove beaches nearby. Ready to book a paddle or a boat trip? See things to do.

Common questions

Can you walk to Benagil Cave?

No. There is no land route into the cave — you reach it by kayak, stand-up paddleboard or boat from Praia de Benagil or a nearby town. A clifftop trail lets you look down into the dome, but not enter it.

Is it safe to swim to Benagil Cave?

Swimming is strongly discouraged and can be restricted because of currents and boat traffic. A kayak, paddleboard or boat is the safe way in.

Where do Benagil boat tours leave from?

Boat trips run from Portimão, Lagos, Albufeira, Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra, as well as small rentals directly on Praia de Benagil.
