Barlavento, Centro and Sotavento — how the Algarve’s three coasts differ, and which one fits your trip.
The short version: the Algarve splits into three. The west (Barlavento) is cliffs, caves and surf; the centre (Centro) is big beaches, golf and nightlife; the east (Sotavento) is calm island water and quieter towns. Everywhere is within about 90 minutes of Faro airport, so pick by mood, not distance.
The three coasts at a glance
Barlavento — the west Algarve
The west is the Algarve of the postcards: golden limestone cliffs, hidden coves and the famous Benagil cave. Base yourself in Lagos for old-town charm and the coves of Ponta da Piedade, or head to wild, windswept Sagres and Cabo de São Vicente — the south-western tip of Europe, crowned by its lighthouse. Great for dramatic scenery, surf and boat trips.

Centro — the central Algarve
The busy heart of the coast — long sandy beaches, marinas, golf resorts and the liveliest nightlife. Albufeira is the all-rounder for first-timers and families; Vilamoura adds marina glamour and seafood tables. Central is also the most convenient base, roughly equidistant from the airport and both coasts.
Main towns: Albufeira, Vilamoura, Armação de Pêra, Carvoeiro, Loulé.
Sotavento — the east Algarve
The east is quieter, warmer-watered and more Portuguese. Barrier islands along the Ria Formosa lagoon give you calm, shallow, soft-sand beaches reached by short ferries — ideal for young children. Tavira is the prettiest base, all cobbles and churches; Olhão has the best food market on the coast.
